If the thought of going to the dentist makes you nervous, you are not alone. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and for some people, it can be enough to delay or avoid dental care altogether.
At McDaniell & Nevotti Dentistry, we believe your dental experience should feel comfortable, welcoming, and never rushed. We take the time to listen to your concerns, explain your treatment, and make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way. And if you need a little extra help relaxing, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral sedation options for appropriate patients.
What Is Dental Anxiety?
Dental anxiety can range from mild nervousness before an appointment to a strong fear that makes it difficult to schedule or attend dental visits.
You may experience anxiety because of:
- A previous uncomfortable or negative dental experience
- Fear of needles or injections
- Sensitivity to sounds, smells, or dental instruments
- Fear of pain or discomfort
- Feeling embarrassed about the condition of your teeth
- Anxiety about not knowing what to expect
- A general fear of losing control or feeling uncomfortable during treatment
Whatever the reason, your concerns are valid. You never need to feel embarrassed about being anxious at the dentist.
Why Avoiding the Dentist Can Make Things Harder
When dental anxiety causes you to postpone appointments, small problems can sometimes become more complicated over time. Cavities can grow, gum disease can progress, and dental concerns that could have been addressed relatively simply may eventually require more involved treatment.
Regular dental visits allow us to identify potential problems early and help you maintain a healthy smile for years to come.
Our goal isn’t to make you feel pressured into treatment. It’s to create a relationship where you feel comfortable enough to take care of your oral health at your own pace.
Nitrous Oxide for a More Relaxed Visit
For patients who feel nervous about dental treatment, nitrous oxide can be a great option.
Often called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation that is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It can help you feel calm and relaxed while you remain awake and able to communicate with your dental team.
Many patients enjoy nitrous oxide because it works quickly and the effects wear off relatively soon after treatment.
Oral Sedation
For patients who experience more significant dental anxiety, oral sedation may also be an option.
Oral sedation uses medication taken at the start of your appointment to help you feel deeply relaxed during your dental treatment. Because oral sedation can cause drowsiness and affect coordination and memory, patients receiving it will receive specific instructions from our team regarding preparation, transportation, and aftercare.
Before recommending sedation, we will review your medical history, medications, and planned treatment to determine which option is appropriate and safe for you.
You’re Still in Control
One of the most important things to us is that you feel heard.
We want you to feel comfortable telling us if you’re nervous, need a break, have questions, or simply want us to explain what’s happening. We can establish a signal you can use during treatment when you need us to pause, and we’ll always encourage you to communicate your concerns.
There is no “right” way to feel at the dentist. Our job is to meet you where you are and help make your experience as comfortable as possible.
